Herbalife was started in 1980 by Mark Hughes. The company has offices in more than 50 countries all over the world, has more than one million distributors and sells products for close to $2 billion dollars a year.
Mark Hughes wanted to help people to lose weight without having to resk peoples health.
At the beginning, Hughes sold his protein-shake from his own car. People who tried his shake experienced two things: They lost weight, and their friends asked how they did this. The mouth to mouth marketing started and ever since then Herbalife has used this way of marketing with an enormous success. In 1999 Herbalife sold products for 2 billion dollars.
As a member of the Direct Selling Association, Herbalife has more than a million independent Distributors worldwide, who enjoy the freedom that comes from being their own boss. This highly effective distribution system is still the only one Herbalife uses, and has brought Herbalife from a one-man operation to a nearly $2 billion multinational corporation.
